The rules, step by step

  1. Nine letters, forty-five seconds — four rounds, both of you hunting at once.
  2. Tap tiles to spell any real word of three letters or more. It stands when the dictionary takes it.
  3. You can replace your standing word right up to the buzzer.
  4. At the whistle both standing words score their length; all nine letters at once scores 18.
  5. The SAME word on both phones scores once — call out what you’re chasing.
  6. Both happy early? Either of you can call it and bank the round.

Scoring and the fiddly bits

The deal

Nine letters a round, four rounds in a run. The vowel count is fixed by round — three, four, three, four — so every week has the same shape.

Standing words

A word stands the instant the dictionary accepts it and can be replaced any number of times before the buzzer. Nothing else is ever submitted.

Scoring

Each standing word scores its length at the whistle, and all nine letters at once scores 18. A word standing on both phones scores once.

Ending a round early

Either of you can call it, but only once both words stand — nobody can whistle away the other’s round while they have nothing down.

One run a week

The racks are generated from the ISO week and stay hidden until the clock starts. Each player gets one pair run and one solo run.
