How to play Pictionary
Pictionary is a drawing game for teams: one player draws a word without speaking, and their team races the clock to guess it. All it takes is paper, a pen and a word nobody else has seen.
- Split into two teams. Each team needs paper and a pen, or a whiteboard.
- One player draws a word on this page without letting their team see it.
- Start the 60-second timer. They draw; their team shouts guesses. No letters, numbers or talking.
- A right guess before the time runs out scores a point. The turn passes to the other team and a new drawer. First team to 10 points wins.
With young kids
Use the Easy words, skip the timer and let everyone guess at once. Whisper the word to a child who can’t read it yet.
In a classroom
Draw on the board, split the class into two teams and give every student a turn. Easy and Medium suit younger classes; the Hard list of actions and ideas stretches older ones.
On a video call
The drawer opens this page on their own phone, then holds paper up to the camera or shares a whiteboard. Everyone else types or calls out guesses.
Just two of you
Take turns drawing for each other and count how many words each of you gets in three minutes. Beat your own score next time.

What makes a good Pictionary word
The levels here are about drawing, not about rare words. Each one sorts words by how much the drawer has to work to make them clear.
One clear shape
Apple, house, fish: the first line says most of the answer. That is what makes a word Easy, not how rare it is.
Things before ideas
Objects are easier to draw than actions, and actions are easier than feelings. The Hard list is mostly actions and ideas.
Something everyone has seen
A word only half the room knows is a bad word however drawable it is. Skip it and draw another.
No spelling required
If a word can only be drawn with letters or numbers, it is not a good word. None of these need either.
Printable Pictionary cards
Each PDF is a sheet of cut-out cards, 30 to a page, that prints at full size on A4 or US Letter. Print, cut along the lines and drop the cards in a bowl. To print the lists as they are on this page, use the button below.
Play it with friends: Scribble Race
Scribble Race is Table Party’s draw-and-guess game. One player draws a secret word and everyone else races to type it on their own phone, with letters appearing as hints while the clock runs. 2 to 12 players, 10 to 20 min.
Free, on everyone’s phone.
Pictionary words: common questions
What are good Pictionary words for beginners?
Things with one clear shape: apple, house, fish, sun, cat. The Easy list has 223 of them. Start there, and move up a level once your group guesses most words inside 20 seconds.
How do you play Pictionary without the board game?
You need paper, a pen, a timer and a list of words. Split into two teams, show one player a word in secret, and give them a minute to draw it while their own team guesses. This page gives you the words and the timer.
How long should a Pictionary turn be?
One minute suits most groups. Give younger children, or anyone drawing a Hard word, 90 seconds, or play without a timer at all.
What are the drawing rules?
No letters, numbers or symbols that spell the answer, no talking and no acting it out. Most groups let the drawer point at part of the drawing and nod at a close guess; agree on that before you start.
Can kids play Pictionary?
Yes. Anyone who can hold a pen can draw an Easy word, and a child who can’t read yet can have the word whispered to them. The Christmas words were written to be fine for children.
Is there a Pictionary word generator I can use on my phone?
This page is one. Pick a level, tap Next word, and turn on the 60-second timer if you want it. It works in any phone browser, and the words are picked on your own device.
Are these the words Scribble Race uses?
The 691 words in the Easy, Medium and Hard lists are the ones Table Party’s Scribble Race deals. The 100 Christmas words were written for this page.
