About 21 Questions

21 Questions is a conversation game with one rule: you ask, they answer honestly, and you keep going until you reach twenty-one. It works in a car, at a table or on a call, and you learn more than you expect by about question fifteen.

Each set here has a shape. The first few questions are easy so nobody freezes, the middle gets richer, and question 21 is the one people carry home. Pick the set that suits the mood, or work through all four in an evening.

How to play 21 Questions

  1. In the classic version, one person asks 21 questions in a row and the other answers each one honestly. Then you swap.
  2. Follow-ups are free. A “why?” or “tell me more” doesn’t use up one of the 21, so you can stay with a good answer.
  3. Agree a pass rule first. One pass each is a fair default, and a pass never needs an explanation.
  4. To play with a group, pass the questions round a circle: each person reads the next one and everybody answers in turn until you reach 21.
  5. Or split into pairs, run a set each, and swap partners for the next one. Everybody ends up asking and answering.

Tips for a better round

Let the openers do their job

The first few questions are easy on purpose. Answer them quickly and save the long stories for later.

Ask why once

One follow-up on a good answer beats moving straight on. It turns a list of 21 questions into a real conversation.

Answer your own questions

If you ask, take a turn answering too. It makes the game a swap between equals and not an interview.

Keep a pass in your pocket

People answer more freely when they know they can skip one. Most never use the pass, and that’s fine.

Common questions about 21 Questions

What is the 21 Questions game?

21 Questions is a conversation game where one person asks another 21 questions and the answers have to be honest. It’s a quick way to get to know someone, at a table, in a car or on a call.

How do you play 21 Questions?

One person asks 21 questions in a row and the other answers each honestly, then you swap. Agree beforehand whether each player gets a pass, and whether follow-up questions count towards the 21.

How many people can play 21 Questions?

Two is the classic number. With a group, pass the questions round a circle so everyone answers each one in turn, or split into pairs and swap partners after each set of 21.

How do you keep 21 Questions comfortable?

Agree that anyone can pass on any question without explaining, and choose the set that suits the people playing. The friends and funny sets suit a crowd; the couples and deeper sets suit pairs and small groups.

Can you play 21 Questions over text or a video call?

Yes. On a call, take turns asking and answering. By text, send one question at a time and reply when you can, or trade voice notes if typing feels like too much.

Is 21 Questions the same as 20 Questions?

Not usually. 20 Questions is a guessing game where you ask yes-or-no questions to work out what someone is thinking of. 21 Questions is a get-to-know-you game with open questions and honest answers.
