About Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever is a confession game. Someone names something they have never done, and anyone who has done it owns up. The fun is in the reveal: you find out who in the group once got their head stuck in a jumper.

The best statements are specific. “Never have I ever pretended to be on a call to avoid a conversation” gets a laugh and a story. “Never have I ever told a lie” gets every hand up and a shrug. Every line below is written for the first kind.

How to play Never Have I Ever

  1. Everyone holds up ten fingers. On a video call, hold both hands up to the camera. Pick who reads first.
  2. The reader says a statement. Anyone who has done it puts a finger down and, if they like, tells the story. Everyone else keeps their hands up.
  3. Pass the reading round the circle. The last person with a finger still up wins. That is the classic fingers-down game.
  4. For points, score one for every statement that only you have done, or one for the story the group votes best. First to ten wins.
  5. Nobody needs a drink to play. If you want a forfeit, make it silly: a terrible accent for the next round, or a compliment for the person on your left.

Tips for a better round

Start easy, finish strange

Open with statements most people have done, then move on to the odd ones once the group has relaxed.

Let anyone skip

Say at the start that anyone can pass on a statement without explaining, and people will share more, not less.

Ask for the story, not the count

When a hand goes up, ask what happened, because the stories are the game and the tally only starts them.

Add your own

Swap in statements about a shared trip, a school or a running joke, because in-jokes land harder than any list.

Common questions about Never Have I Ever

What is Never Have I Ever?

It is a party game where players take turns saying something they have never done, and anyone who has done it admits it, usually by putting a finger down. It works as an icebreaker because it turns small embarrassments into stories.

How do you play Never Have I Ever?

Everyone holds up ten fingers, one player says “Never have I ever…” and finishes the sentence, and anyone who has done it puts a finger down. The last person with a finger up wins. No drinking is needed.

How many people do you need for Never Have I Ever?

You need at least three, and six to ten is the sweet spot. With fewer, there are not enough surprises; with more, turns drag unless everyone answers at once.

How do you make Never Have I Ever less awkward?

Agree at the start that anyone can skip a statement without explaining. Begin with light topics like food, travel and school, and keep the more personal statements for later.

Can you play Never Have I Ever on a video call?

Yes. Everyone holds their hands up to the camera and puts fingers down as statements are read. You can also type “me” in the chat, which lets people answer without speaking.

What makes a good Never Have I Ever question?

A good one is specific and story-provoking, and the group cannot guess the answer in advance. “Pretended to be on a call to avoid a conversation” works; “told a lie” does not, because every hand goes down.
