What Only One is
One player guesses a word; everyone else writes one clue. Matching clues cancel each other out — so the obvious clue is the risky one.
You are playing the deck, not each other. Thirteen cards by default, one score for the whole table, and a rating printed at the end: thirteen out of thirteen is Perfect, nine is Great, four is Average.
The skill is not writing the best clue, it is writing the one nobody else will. Two players who both wrote “black” have both wasted their turn, and every clue in a colliding group dies — not just the one that arrived second.
A wrong guess costs the card in play and the next one off the deck. A pass costs only the card, which is what makes passing a real decision rather than a way of avoiding one.
How to play Only One
- One player is the guesser. Everyone else sees the secret word.
- Each clue giver writes exactly one word — no part of the secret word itself.
- Identical clues cancel each other out. The obvious clue is usually the wasted one.
- The guesser sees what survived and gets one guess.
- Right keeps the card. Wrong costs you this card and the next one. Pass costs just this one.
- It is you against the deck: thirteen cards, one score for the whole table.
How to win at Only One
Skip your first idea
So will three other people, and all four of you will lose the clue.
Aim sideways, not closer
A clue nobody else would think to write beats a more accurate one that two of you share.
Pass early, not late
A pass costs one card and a wrong guess costs two.
Read the dead clues
As guesser, two cancellations tell you the obvious road was crowded and the survivors are the odd ones.
Write for this guesser
A clue that only lands on the person guessing beats a clue that would land on anybody.
Questions about Only One
What exactly counts as a duplicate clue?
Case, accents, hyphens and spaces are ignored, and a trailing -s, -es, -ed or -ing comes off when at least four letters remain. “Ocean” and “oceans” cancel each other; “cat” and “cats” do not.
Does the guesser see the cancelled clues?
They see that clues died, and how many, but never the words. Knowing that two people both wrote BLACK would be most of the answer.
What does a wrong guess cost?
The card, plus the next one off the deck — as in the box game, and the reason passing exists. The deck is the clock, so a run of wrong guesses shortens the game.
Can a clue be more than one word?
No — a two-word entry is refused rather than quietly trimmed, so nothing reaches the table that its author didn’t write. Hyphenated compounds fit inside the 24-character cap.
Is Only One free?
Yes. Every game on Table Party is free, with no accounts, no adverts and nothing to buy.
How many people do you need for Only One?
Between 3 and 7. Below 3 there are not enough of you for the game to work.
Do we need to download anything?
No. One person opens the site and starts a room; everybody else joins by typing the room code on their own phone. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
Can we play Only One over a video call?
Yes. Share the room code in the chat and play with the call running — everything private stays on each player’s own phone.
