What Wits & Bets is
Every question has a number nobody knows. Write your guess, then bet on whichever answer on the table lands closest — even someone else’s.
Knowing the answer is optional. All the guesses go up in ascending order and the board pays by position: the middle is the safe money at 2:1 and the odds climb outward, reaching 6:1 at the ends of a wide board.
Below the lowest guess sits a square that always pays 5:1, for the round where the whole table overshoots. It is how one player who trusts nobody quietly cleans up while everybody else argues about the middle.
The numbers are public the moment betting opens; who wrote them is not. You are judging the guess rather than the guesser — a harder question, and the reason backing your own number is usually the wrong instinct.
How to play Wits & Bets
- Every answer is a number. Write your best guess — being wildly wrong is survivable.
- All the guesses go up in order, and the longest odds sit at the edges.
- Now bet. You can back your own guess, or anybody else’s.
- The winning guess is the closest one that does not go over the true answer.
- Knowing nothing is fine. Knowing who knows things is better.

Guess low on purpose
Closest without going over means a guess under the truth beats a nearer one above it.
The middle is the cheap seat
A slot in the centre of the board pays 2:1 where the same chip three slots out pays 5:1.
Your number pays either way
Owning the winning guess scores 3 whether or not you backed it, so bet on the one you think wins.
Take the square when in doubt
If every number on the board looks high, the slot below them all is worth 10 points.
Read the board, not the question
By the time you bet, where the guesses have clustered tells you more than the trivia ever did.
Questions about Wits & Bets
How many bets do I get?
One a round, on any slot including your own guess or the “smaller than all” square. A winning bet pays 2 points times the slot’s odds, so a 5:1 slot pays 10.
What if two of us write the same number?
It becomes one slot with two owners, and both score if it wins. Merging them also stops one number taking two positions on the board and quietly improving its own odds.
What if everybody guesses too high?
The square below the lowest guess takes the round at 5:1. Nobody scores for owning a number, and anyone who backed the square takes 10 points.
How are the odds worked out?
By position, not by the number itself. The middle slot pays 2:1 and each step outward adds one, up to 6:1 — so a three-guess board tops out at 3:1 and a nine-guess board reaches the full ladder.

Yes. Every game on Table Party is free, with no accounts, no adverts and nothing to buy.
How many people do you need for Wits & Bets?
Between 3 and 12. Below 3 there are not enough of you for the game to work. Table Party for Teams seats up to 100 in one room.
Do we need to download anything?
No. One person opens the site and starts a room; everybody else joins by typing the room code on their own phone. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
Can we play Wits & Bets over a video call?
