Games for 3 players

Three is the size where a vote stops meaning much and a bid starts meaning everything, so the games that hold up are the ones with nowhere to hide in them.

Thorns at three is a knife fight. There are only two other piles on the table, every disc came from a hand of four you already know the shape of, and whoever bids has to clear their own stack before they may touch either of yours.

Watch the co-ops. Only One at three leaves two clue givers, and any two clues that match are thrown away before the guesser sees them — so the round where you both had the same good idea sends them in with nothing at all.

Picture Stories and Bad Drawings are both at their floor here, usefully so: the storyteller is hiding one card among two, and the clue that would be perfect at six is far too easy. Word Grid, Quiz Night and Word Tiles do not care how many of you there are.

Twelve that hold up at three

Thorns3–6 players · 10–15 minTwo other piles, four discs each, and the last bidder has to flip their own stack first. The best fight on the page. Property Deal2–5 players · 10–15 minTwo rivals, both able to charge rent on and steal from what is sitting on your table. First to three colour sets, on the spot. Clover2–6 players · 15–20 minOne score for the three of you. Two people rebuild each clover from four clues, and every clue was written for exactly them. Only One3–7 players · 10–15 minTwo clue-givers, one guesser. Matching clues cancel, so at three the obvious clue is a real gamble. Werewolf3–10 players · 5–10 minThree unclaimed cards in the middle can hold both wolves. If you all point at different people, nobody hangs. Word Tiles2–4 players · 20–50 minThe full board and the real hundred tiles. Three is a comfortable count, and invalid words simply will not play. Paper Novel2–5 players · 15–25 minA deck-building word game. Three means the card offer turns over fast enough that nobody sits on a plan. Ruff Luck2–8 players · 5–15 minTwo bombs in the deck for three dogs. Short, mean, and over in ten minutes. Bad Drawings3–8 players · 10–20 minTwo people inventing titles for your drawing, then a three-way vote on which was real. Picture Stories3–8 players · 15–20 minThe storyteller hides one card among two, so the clue has to be exactly as vague as it needs to be. Word Grid2–12 players · up to 100 with Teams · 5–10 minEveryone hunts the same sixteen dice at once. Any word two of you found scores nothing. Quiz Night1–12 players · 3–19 minThree seats and the house fills the rest, so the scoreboard never feels thin.

Playing in under a minute

  1. 1One person opens tableparty.io on a phone or a laptop and picks a game.
  2. 2Everyone else types the four-letter room code on their own phone. Nothing to install.
  3. 3Play. Anything secret stays on your own screen, so it works across a table or a video call.

Questions about Games for 3 players

Is Werewolf any good at three?

It works and it is strange. Three cards still sit unclaimed in the middle, so both werewolves can be down there — and if all three of you point at different people, nobody hangs, which is how the village wins that round.

Which of these are properly competitive?

Thorns, Property Deal, Word Tiles, Paper Novel, Ruff Luck and Word Grid. The rest hand every player their own score off the same round, which at three is usually the fairer fight anyway.

What needs more than three?

Art Fraud starts at four, and Quest of Shadows and Secret Dictator at five. At three the hidden-role games become a conversation between the only two people who could possibly be lying.

Anything for three that is not a party game?

Word Tiles seats two to four and Paper Novel two to five, and three is a comfortable count for either. Property Deal at three means two rivals, both able to take what is sitting on your table.
