What Paper Novel is

A deck-building word game: spell words, buy better letters, cash in for Fame — knowing every Fame card clogs your deck.

Five cards, one word, one purchase. What you did not play goes to the discard pile alongside what you did, so there is no holding a Z back for a better hand — your deck is the only memory this game has.

Fame cards are wilds as well as points, so the ones you buy keep spelling; they simply never earn another cent. The last third of a game is spent reading lovely words you cannot afford to act on.

The moment any Fame pile sells out, the round is played to its end and that is that. The cheap one-point pile is usually the one to go, so a rival hoovering it up is not buying badly — they are calling time on you.

How to play Paper Novel

  1. Everyone starts with the same ten cards: five plain letters and five wilds.
  2. Tap cards to spell a word. A wild can be any letter you like.
  3. The word earns the cents printed on the cards you used. Some cards do more than that.
  4. Spend it on ONE card from the offer — a better letter, or Fame.
  5. Everything you played goes to your discard pile and you draw five fresh cards.
  6. Fame is the score, and it is also a wild — so it still spells, it just never earns.
  7. When a Fame pile runs out the round is finished and the most Fame wins.

How to win at Paper Novel

Wilds spell but never pay

A wild can be any letter you like and pays zero cents, so a five-letter word carried by three of them will barely buy a D.

Nothing in the offer is a vowel

Every letter you can buy is a consonant, which makes your wilds the only A, E, I, O or U your deck will ever hold.

Double wants your biggest card

The double power multiplies only the card it is printed on, so it is worth twelve cents on the Z and eight on the K.

Watch the cheapest Fame pile

It is the tier that runs out, and running out is the ending — so start counting it long before you want the game to stop.

Toss a dead hand

Five consonants and no wild will spell nothing at all; binning the hand costs the turn but deals you five fresh cards.

Questions about Paper Novel

Do my unplayed cards stay in my hand?

No. Everything you were holding goes to your discard pile at the end of the turn and you draw five fresh, so a good letter cannot be saved for later.

How does Paper Novel differ from the printed game?

The loop is Paperback’s own — spell, earn, buy exactly one card, redraw. We left out the shared Common Card, the word-length track and most of the card powers, because a phone turn has to stay readable.

What counts as a word?

Anything of two letters or more in the list all our word games share: ENABLE1 plus the words that joined the official tournament lists after it. About 168,000 in all, and the check is instant.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes — seat a bot from the lobby and it spells against the same dictionary and shops from the same offer you do. It is a game rather than a warm-up.

Is Paper Novel free?

Yes. Every game on Table Party is free, with no accounts, no adverts and nothing to buy.

How many people do you need for Paper Novel?

Between 2 and 5. Below 2 there are not enough of you for the game to work.

Do we need to download anything?

No. One person opens the site and starts a room; everybody else joins by typing the room code on their own phone. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

Can we play Paper Novel over a video call?

Yes. Share the room code in the chat and play with the call running — everything private stays on each player’s own phone.
